Not to put too fine a point on it, although the troops in the photo are Marines, the Honor Guard of the Tomb of the Unknown is always, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the US Army 3rd Infantry Regiment.
Although I think the Marines are a fine military force, they are not the only one nor are they the oldest. The US Army is the senior service by several years. The one thing that the Marines have that is superior to all other US forces is the finest, most aggressive publicity department in military history.
And although listenting to the news one would think that the only US forces in Iraq are Marines this is not true. Nor is the commonly held 'belief' that all fighting in the the Pacific Theatre of WW II was done by the Marines.
My dear old Dad always used to say that whenever the Army needed to know where the Marines were on the battlefield they'd send scouts to find the cameramen, the Marines would be right near by.
Regardless of the army's age and the marines P.R. department. The Corp is the finest fighting force the United States fields. This is coming from a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry.
