Downtime - For reasons beyond my control, my Verizon DSL was utterly unavailable today. Now it works. There’s really no point in calling DSL support so they can ask me stupid questions like: “Is your modem turned on?”

not to defend Verizon (a company that I despise), but I worked tech support for a cable company many years ago, and asking questions such as "is your modem turned on?" can save a LOT of time and frustration in some cases

I remember very well one day when a elderly lady called up to say she was sick and tired of having her cable cut out every day around a certain time.. after going through a lot of questions, I eventually decided to ask her what outlet her cable box was plugged into.. then I asked her if that outlet was controlled by a light switch.. after asking that question, she became a bit flustered and politely hung up, never to be heard from again

so Eric.. IS your cable modem turned on? ;)

It is now!

When I brought my computer to Geek Squad for service, I handed them a full page detailing the problems I was having. I wanted them to understand that I *know* how to get into the registry and msconfig files. (Turns out it was a dying hard drive).

That said, I know a guy at work who did tech support for a while and basically repeated your story.
