i would assume $1 million is pocket change to him. surely giving it back wouldn't be such a hardship?

Isn't 'martyr oneself' an oxymoron? Unless you count murderous jihadi suicide bombers, martyr generally implies someone doing something TO you. Maybe Ben was too enervated by the convention to think straight.
