Hope springs eternal - Do the Democrats have a lock on the White House in 2008? A historian from Rutgers says "Not so fast... " in the Boston Globe.

While it's true that the White House is no sure thing for the Dems, the odds certainly favor it. The GOP has essentially lost the independent vote and will have to reclaim it, inch by inch.

It's close to a certainty that the Democrats will build upon their daunting 2006 gains in both houses of Congress. Open Senate races are disproportionately geared against the GOP (something like 18 to 6), without even factoring in Republican polling woes. If everything breaks down the middle, the Dems pick up six seats.

So don't be surprised to see a 55/45 split up top, with Lieberman in the 45. And 250/185 in the House.

As for the 1/0 majority in the White House, anything can happen, although the Globe writer leaning on the Nixon/McGovern "precedent" is just filling column space. It ain't 1972, and this ain't Vietnam. In a political environment where Tom Daschle has a chance of returning, the '08 trendlines are blue, blue, blue.
