Hmmmmm. Maybe I should have mentioned that in the book the scientist is trying to kill the infected survivors during the day when they're 'asleep' and they come to regard him with horror, since all they're trying to do is live their lives. He's a reverse vampire.

Didn't check it out. Is it from the classic Richard Matheson (I think)? If so, the book was pretty good. I suspect the idea is not as novel now.
