Cough it up - From the Boston Globe "Big Dig deal could hit $1b": "State and federal officials are demanding that Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff pay as much as $1 billion to settle claims for shoddy work on the Big Dig, in exchange for a guarantee that the consortium will not face criminal charges in last year's tunnel collapse that killed Milena Del Valle, according to four sources with knowledge of the negotiations."

Bechtel also got a sweet government contract for taking care of Katrina victims. If they screwed up the Big Dig, surely it's only because they focused all their attention into doing a really competent and effective job in New Orleans.

Heaven forbid we should blame any of the bazillions of Massachusetts government workers involved. I'm sure they could have built it properly all by themselves if Bechtel hadn't shouldered them out of the way.

All those legislators, and bureaucrats, and inspectors with their hands out (one way or another) are totally blameless, I'm sure.
