A federal judge and his AI hallucinations

Ace: "To Presume to Overrule a State Anti-DEI Executive Order, a, Get This, DEI Judge Uses AI to Write An Opinion Filled With Fake Cases."

The Fifth Circuit slapped this clown judge down hard, calling his ruling a "botch job," and insisting that it be remanded back for review by any other judge except Judge ChatGPT.
This is very harsh: Usually judges protect each other like media hacks protect their fellow guild members.

But this appeals panel is absolutely blasting this complete DEI incompetent.
Yeah, because this embarrasses the entire judiciary branch which - let's face it - hasn't been covering itself in glory recently.

Short answer: make stuff up

Manhattan Contrarian: "The New York Times Shows Democrats How To Run On "Energy Affordability"
Here’s the Times’s technique.  The article is mostly a personal tale of woe, focusing on a single Oklahoma couple, Daryl Mason and Genia Weitz, who live in the town of McAlester.  It seems that Mason and Weitz are facing completely unaffordable electricity bills in the wake of this summer’s heat wave.
The New York Times has its narrative of climate change and indifferent Red states so it's inconvenient to apply even a little bit of skepticism to this couple's story of a $500/month electric bill:
At 14.33¢/kWh, $500 represents almost 3500 kWh of usage.  The EIA has a “frequently asked question” page on this very subject, headed “How much electricity does an American home use?”  Their answer is, on average, 899 kWh per month, or 10,791 kWh per year.  Usage of 899 kWh in a month at 14.33¢/kWh will cost $128.83, not $500.  Are we really to believe that Mason and Weitz use almost four times the amount of electricity used by an average household, while supposedly cramming themselves into one room, using a single air conditioner, and turning off the light and the ceiling fan to save on electricity, all as described in the article?  It’s completely absurd.
Math is hard, right NYT?

One and done, California-style

Wall Street Journal: "California’s Wealth Tax Boomerang - A new study says Prop. 40 could lose revenue for the state."
“The state’s cash flows will have a pattern similar to that of the sale of a financial security: the state receives an up-front payment today from one narrow group of taxpayers in exchange for a lost stream of payments in the future,” the paper explains. The overall result will be a revenue loss of $38.9 billion to the state.

Prop. 40 has already done damage, and if it passes, expect more pain than gain.
In my opinion, one of the funniest selling points for the wealth tax is that it's a "one time" tax on billionaires.  Zero - there is zero chance that California won't try to dip into that well after they run out of money again.

California is disenfranchising the entire nation

Ace: "The Federal Government Identified 20,000 Mail-In Votes In California Likely Cast by Illegal Aliens. California Refuses to Segregate These Ballots to Verify the "Voters'" Eligibility to Vote Before Counting Them."

Ever-petulant California and Gavin "French Laundry" Newsom is flying the "resistance!" flag and refusing to verify that voters in American elections are...American.  As in "legal" voters.  Because Trump.

California is an enormous state so a tiny percentage of illegal voters is negating a sizable number of legal voters in the rest of the country.  Remember when George W. Bush won the Presidency by 537 votes?  Good times.  Just tell us what the new rules are.  We'll adjust accordingly.

Don't Massachusetts my Texas

The Boston Globe has a series called "Why Massachusetts lost it's mojo - and how we get it back."  It looks like that strategy is to be more like Texas: "He left Boston for Austin. He’s not the only one. - By the numbers, the ‘Texas mecca’ isn’t so different from the Massachusetts capital. But only one of the cities is booming."
“I want to stay forever,” Bisono proclaimed on hour 16 in his new city.

When Bisono and his roommate, Marino Ginebra, moved from Boston to Austin in September, they joined a growing club of emigres. Texas has become a top destination for those leaving Massachusetts, and young people in particular are exiting at an alarming rate, IRS data show. Bisono and Ginebra both came to Boston for college, worked in the city for a year, then decided to head south in search of cheaper housing, better weather, and a stronger entrepreneurial landscape for their fledgling supplement business. In Austin, they hope to find more job opportunities and a lifestyle more suitable for 20-somethings who are past the college partying stage but not yet settled down.
This article shows the median rent and job growth in Boston vs. Austin and it's really no competition, especially if you're a young professional.

Like clockwork

Twitchy: "Try Not to Get Run Over While the NYTimes Quickly Moves the Goalpost Voter Fraud Severity."

Get woke, go broke

Reason: "College Still Has a Future, but It's No Longer the Default Choice - High costs and political bias have eroded higher education’s standing."

A lesson that Hampshire College learned too late:
The parking lots are mostly vacant. Locked and dark, many of the buildings are lifeless but for dying plants in dusty pots. One of the few people visible is a white-bearded man on a riding mower, tending to an empty lawn as if by habit.

This is not a factory or office park abandoned by its tenants. It’s Hampshire College, a once-celebrated liberal arts school that will shut down in December. That makes it the latest in a steady stream of colleges that are closing or merging, at a rate that last year reached the equivalent of nearly one every three weeks.
It's a hard truth that colleges lowered their standards and then employers didn't find much premium in a college education.

Circle those wagons

Townhall: "Federal Agents Are Dumpster Diving Through Ilhan Omar's Trash. Does This Go Beyond Immigration Fraud."
Multiple sources have confirmed to me that federal agents went dumpster diving to get DNA from Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and her family before the raid on her D.C. home earlier this week. Our reporting suggests investigations go far beyond simple immigration fraud.

NewsNation sources say the likely coming indictments will be stunning in nature and far beyond anything the public has understood the case to be about.
Reminder: this investigation started under the Biden Justice Department.  From what I've read, I believe the immigration charges are going to be hard to prove because (as I understand it) all the immigration documentation from Somalia burned up in a fire.  It's going to be Learing Center fraud.

The Townhall link has a video of CNN, of course, pulling the old "we don't really know the charges" act to give Omar the benefit of the doubt.  Every time...if you're a Democrat.

Three weeks before election day

Washington Free Beacon: "Abdul El-Sayed’s Mother Was Active in Muslim Brotherhood in College, Sister Said."
Abdul El-Sayed’s mother—whom the left-wing Michigan Senate candidate has described as "smart, warm, charismatic" and whom he called on camera in a May campaign video—was active in the Muslim Brotherhood while in college in Egypt, a revelation that further contradicts El-Sayed’s recent claims that neither he nor his family have ties to the radical Islamist group.

Eman Abdelhadi, a University of Chicago professor and El-Sayed’s half-sister, wrote about her mother and other family members’ ties to the Muslim Brotherhood in social media posts in June 2012, just after Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi was elected president of Egypt.
This information is just coming out just now after this dude has been in the race for months.  What, exactly, do "journalists" do all day?
Kristin Welker did not question Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed's deep family connections to the Muslim Brotherhood. She did instead what all left-wing "journalistic" activists do, give him an easy opportunity to deny the facts without any push-back that might cause him discomfort.
"That denial was just delightful," Kristin cooed.

A lesson for California (they probably won't take)

Washington Post editorial: "Billionaires are leaving Britain — and sending a warning to the U.S. - An exodus of billionaires representing $160 billion in wealth should give California voters pause."

As the tax base dries up, welfare spending is out of control: "The Welfare State Is Crushing Britain - The soaring number of people on disability and sickness benefits is blowing up the country’s welfare bill and imperiling its long-term financial stability."

So maybe it wasn't the flu

Townhall: "Confirmed: James Talarico Was at a Mental Health Facility in Ohio."

This is a litmus test for the mainstream media: Talarico cannot be allowed to continue his campaign until this question is answered.

Who am I kidding?  This will be another incident of Republicans "pouncing" followed by a story about the heartbreak of mental illness to elicit sympathy.

Update - Looking at this report with a more critical eye, it's an anonymous source at this facility and revealing a patient probably violates HIPPA regulations.  The private plane log is circumstantial.  So maybe it's nothing but Talarico can clear this up if he's asked the question.  Will he?  Will the media ask?  Or is this the Biden "basement strategy" all over again?

When Republicans are on the popular side of an issue

Look at this insane framing from the L.A. Times: "How the GOP weaponized trans issues and left Democrats searching for a strategy."

I guess you can say the GOP pounced and/or seized on the issue.

The French are revolting

Well, maybe not the "French": "France’s insane student protests are really about a growing radical Muslim population that wants to get rid of democracy."

This is a sad statement

Zo can't help it

Bret Stephens in the NY Times: "Zohran Mamdani’s Moral Obscenity"
Finally, it is obscene because Mamdani is the mayor for about one million Jewish New Yorkers, many with close relatives in Israel, who deserve better on a day of grief than to be offered the equivalent of an “All Lives Matter” homily. This is yet another of the double standards through which modern-day Jew hatred manifests itself: Whenever antisemitism is mentioned in progressive circles, it is inevitably accompanied by nods about Islamophobia or other bigotries.

It would be better to have a mayor who, if only on Oct. 7, can say: Jewish Lives Matter. Israeli Lives Matter. Full stop. The lectures about Gaza can come some other day.
If only one day a year.

It was always a lie

Remember Cassidy?  She was the star witness, the prime-time behind-the-scenes it girl, who testified to Congress that Trump lunged at the steering wheel of his Presidential transport on January 6th.  The whole thing was disputed by the Beast's driver and, um, physics.

There's zero chance Cornbread Cassidy will go to jail but she may need to give up all the sweet cash from her book.

Learning to write is learning to think

This is an excellent post from Joanne Jacobs: "Is writing obsolete?"
I'm a College Professor. "Writing Isn’t as Important as We Think", writes Joe Cruz, chair of the philosophy department at Williams College in a New York Times commentary.  It's not true that writing develops thinking skills, he agues [sic]. Cruz envisions universities in which "ideas are expressed in real time and analytical thought unfolds as a debate or an oral defense or a group discussion."

That favors the glib, but not the thoughtful.
In "Writing is Good (He Said Controversially)," Matt Taibbi is more blunt about perfesser Joe Cruz's article:
These people are just trolling now. My God.
Can you imagine sending your kid to one of the most expensive private colleges in America and one of the professors is like: "Meh, writing is overrated."

Mississippi students will take over the country.

When you're entirely dependent on the government

Unreported Truths: "Europe is in trouble" - "And its crisis goes a long way to explaining why the American left remains a longshot to take power durably, despite the big gains it will probably make next month."
Europeans have seen the heavy hand of government in a way that Americans, even blue-state Americans, cannot imagine. French local and national government spending makes up 57 percent of the country’s domestic product. In other words, taxpayers (or bondholders) pay for almost three out of every five euros of economic activity. Italy and Germany are at 50 percent. (The United States is at 38 percent.)

That stifling bureaucracy makes starting companies in Europe hard and growing them next to impossible.

The trend is most clearly seen in technology, where Europe is not even an also-ran.
That 57% economic activity statistic is just wild: over half of the country's economic activity depends on the government coffers.

How is this remotely legal?

Just the News: "Jack Smith team tracked Trump defense lawyers’ calls by monitoring his chief of staff's phone - Declassified memos reveal that Jack Smith's secret dragnet, codenamed "Plasmic Echo," monitored senior Trump associates and staff's contacts with lawyers, staff, and journalists during the 2024 campaign."

Am I the crazy one here?  I thought that wiretapping a lawyer was extremely out-of-bounds unless there's credible evidence he/she is involved in a criminal conspiracy.

And yet, Becerra is gonna win

Washington Post editorial: "Who can save California?" - "California, with an economy larger than every country but the United States, China and Germany, is the epicenter of artificial intelligence development. It’s also a basket case, deteriorating at a pace that cannot be ignored or denied in the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)."

This is going to end badly for Jane Doe

Sasha Stone: "The Cornell 7 and The “Consent” Trap - Why We Need Decency and Morality Back."

I didn't know until reading this - but should have known - that the names of the accusers have been released and publicized.  It really was only a matter of time.  As Sasha points out, their pictures are being circulated like "Wanted: Dead or Alive" posters.

But the same goes for Jane Doe.  It will be impossible to keep her name secret once the chatter at Cornell picks up and the internet sleuths are unleashed.  At some point she will have to explain her text message reading "At the end of the day non [sic] of the sexual stuff was illegal" two days after the incident.  It's a terrible situation for all involved but a night of regret is going to upend the lives of everybody involved.

Killing the golden goose

Ripple: "Can a wealth tax solve our political and fiscal problems? The math says no. - Economists have advocated for wealth taxation as a way to reduce political power resulting from wealth concentration. Here’s why that won’t work."

The most recent poll out of California indicates the margin between those who support and those who oppose the wealth tax is shrinking.  Even Gavin Newsom is whipping against it.  But I think it will pass because there's nothing more alluring than getting "somebody else" to pay for things you want.

Go long on U-Haul futures.
