I've published some technical papers and for a short period I was an editor/reviewer for conference proceedings. The "publish or perish" mania is very real and it leads to shortcuts and sometimes outright fraud. The Data Colada guys faced legal peril for pointing out these frauds and they've been vindicated; they're the real heroes in this story.
