ISIS leader dead

This is a breaking story: "Trump describes al-Baghdadi as 'whimpering and crying' before dying in U.S. operation: 'He died like a coward'."

I heard on NPR that the only American casualty was a dog.

Reminder - Trump is scheduled to attend the World Series game tonight.  Should be interesting.  (Whoops: original post said he was going to throw out the first pitch)

Extra - Let's watch the mainstream media spin.  Red State: "CNBC Hack John Harwood Is Really, Really Upset That Al-Baghdadi Was Killed."  "The tweets you are about to see are an absolute clown show."

And this - Glenn Greenwald tweet: "It's genuinely fascinating watching Democrats in real time struggle to figure out what to say about this. They want to be patriotic and anti-ISIS, but also need a way to malign Trump without contradicting their gushing Obama praise over OBL: not an easy balancing act. Good luck!"

Fat Boy even lies about baseball. Donald Trump told reporters that he hadn't decided whether or not he would accept the Washington Nationals' offer to throw out the first pitch at the World Series. “I don't know. They gotta dress me up in a lot of heavy armor. I'll look too heavy. I don't like that.” The MLB Commissioner later said that Trump had made the decision not to throw out the first pitch.

One small problem. As the New York Post put it:
Nationals tell Trump chef Jose Andres is already throwing first pitch

Washington Nationals owner Mark Lerner: "The first pitches are our call, and we felt there are many other candidates that should be considered before him." Andrés was asked before Trump "declined."

And as a liberal, I'm disappointed. I wanted to see Trump out on that mound. Here's what Donald Trump looked like throwing out a first pitch in Fenway Park in 2006, without any heavy armor:

Look at that athletic form. Tremble at the intimidating intensity in his face. For once, Trump wasn't lying when he said, "I was always the best athlete. Something that nobody knew about me. ...I was the best baseball player in New York when I was young. ...Everybody wanted me to be a baseball player. But I was good in other sports too. I was good in wresting, I was very good at football. I was always the best at sports."

Just three more miscellaneous anti-Trump anecdotes ought to neutralize the good will Trump will receive in the eyes of the country for getting Al-Bag-whatever.

Get to work, "liberal".

Yesterday I explained to @wolfblitzercnn on @CNNSitRoom why @BarackObama doesn't deserve credit for killing Bin Laden

That would be the perfect rebuttal if only Trump was himself claiming to have killed Al-Baglady, as Obama did about Bin Laden.

Oop, I spoke too soon...

From The New York Times:

Presidents running for re-election typically boast of programs they created, people they helped or laws they signed. They talk about rising test scores or falling deficits or expanding job rolls. President Trump is increasingly taking the unusual route of bragging about how he killed a man...few presidents have talked about the killing of an individual enemy in such an expansive way.

Darn, my copy skills are declining. Change "Trump" above to "Obama" and you'll have it the way the NY Times wrote it.

President Who? Me? speaking today:
”From the first day I came to office, and now we’re getting close to three years, I would say, “Where’s al-Baghdadi? I want al-Baghdadi. They’re very technically brilliant. You know, they use the Internet better than almost anybody in the world, perhaps other than Donald Trump. ...I've been looking for him for three years. I've been looking for him. …And then I also wanted Hamza bin Laden.” (etc)

But I'm all about finding compromise. You don't like the previous Trump tweet, because Obama? Always because Obama? No problemo! Cancel that tweet. We don't need it.

Crunch all you want, he'll make more.

President Obama, May 2, 2011:
Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we’ve made great strides in that effort. We’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al-Qaeda safe haven and support. And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al-Qaeda terrorists. ...I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al-Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network. ...I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action. ...Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort. There’s no doubt that al-Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must –- and we will -- remain vigilant at home and abroad. ...Tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is the story of our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place. ...Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are."

Wow, talk about a frenzy of agitation! You're at Defcon 5 over this.

One problem - If you intend to make a compelling and devastating parade-like rebuttal, you'll have to actually, you know, rebut. That is, show that Trump is claiming that he killed BagDada. Pro hint: Quoting Trump saying "I want al-Baghdadi" is different than quoting him claiming credit for the killing of the austere religious scholar.

Then follows a string of tweets by Trump criticizing Obama over Bin Laden's killing...proving what, exactly, in the context of the current discussion? That Orange Man nasty and bad?

And I love the exhaustive compendium of Obama quotes on the incident, giving bold credit to "we". Oh wait - those were all from his statement about the mission right after it occurred.

Sorry, it's not convincing - to me, The New York Times, or the Navy Seals themselves.

Face it - Trump had a big win, you demand that Trump not have wins, and reality doesn't care about your demands.

So some fans in Washington's stadium (basically denizens of the swamp) back up your rage. What a compellingly compelling rebuttal.

Your argument has been reduced to, "I take such glee in awkward still photos and an imagined change of Trump's expression." Those are the pitiful crumbs you have to satisfy yourself with.

40,000 people loudly cheering the military, then raining louder boos on Trump, and then cheering the military again — in exact sequence — on Trump ISIS Day? Hysterical and beautiful.

If you're just going to recycle the same old comebacks, then why strain myself? "Al-Bag-whatever will save you!"

Just three more miscellaneous anti-Trump anecdotes ought to neutralize the good will Trump will receive in the eyes of the country for getting Al-Bag-whatever.

Let’s see.

2019 ABC/Washington Post poll:
How much credit, if any, do you think Donald Trump should get for the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi?
A great deal 22%, some 32%, not much 18%, none at all 21%

2019 Huffington Post/YouGov poll:
How much credit, if any, do you think Donald Trump should get for the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi?
A great deal 25%, some 21%, not much 16%, none at all 21%

Which is sadder for you? That your reflexive reaction to U.S. forces killing the ISIS leader was “Ha ha, now watch the polls and weep, liberals”? Or that your vindictive, miserly dream isn’t even happening?

But surely both of those new polls are fake outliers. And after all, your thirsty over-expectations were understandable:

2011 Pew/Washington Post poll:
How much credit, if any, should Barack Obama get for the death of Osama bin Laden?
A great deal 35%, some 41%, not much/none 21%

Obama got 76% credit, to Trump’s 54% or 46%. Ouch.

538.com’s poll aggregator finds that Trump’s job approval is up 0.5% since this time last week, before the raid. That’s nice. After U.S. forces killed Bin Laden in 2011, Obama got an 8% bounce.

Worse yet for you and Trump, Obama’s approval bounce dissipated and went back to his normal preexisting levels after about 2 weeks. So enjoy that extra 0.5% of good will-whatever as fast and as intensely as you can.

On one point, though, you’re completely correct. Trump’s Syria policy IS “receiving good will in the eyes of the country.” TWO of them, in fact. Turkey, and Russia.
