J.D. Tuccille says that it's inaccurate to give government credit for creating the internet, because the networking standard was later changed, because "what we value" about the internet are additions that came afterwards, and because the internet was "something that was happening anyway."
A whopping three paragraphs later, Tuccille writes, "There's something deeply disturbing in the world-view of those who would minimize the achievements of those who pursued the ideas, took the risks, invested the time and money and made things happen."
Gosh, Vike, your post makes it sound like Obama was saying that small business people aren't responsible for their own innovations.
What he was saying that the societal and physical infrastructure that enables innovation and success requires government to make them happen. This is self-evident and the reason why we have a constitution. He said that the small businesses didn't build the bridges and roads, that successful people have teachers inspiring them, etc.
Here's the quote, without anything taken out of context and re-interpreted to fit the narrative:
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen."
I think you may have heard this the other night while you were cavorting in that liberal den of iniquity, Lenox, MA:
"Get thee glass eyes; And like a scurvy politician, seem To see the things thou dost not."
What Obama said has part of a valid point, but it doesn't justify the kind of government interference and taxation upon private business that he wants to impose.
