Worst. Congress. Ever. - From Gallup: "A new Gallup Poll finds Congress' approval rating the lowest it has been since Gallup first tracked public opinion of Congress with this measure in 1974. Just 18% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, while 76% disapprove, according to the August 13-16, 2007, Gallup Poll."

The drop is entirely due to a collapse in support from Democrats and independents frustrated by a Congress more adept at sending subpoenas than passing legislation. At least the non-voting teenagers of America are happy about the minimum wage increase.

Think before cheering. The poll numbers are all because the voters wanted Bush's agenda stopped in 2006, and it is not being stopped. It's an anti-Bush result.

How this unpopularity will translate into increased support for the GOP in 2008, only a medieval alchemist could say.

The number of Republican incumbents announcing that they will not seek reelection tells you more about the political terrain for the next cycle than any poll about people's dislike of Congress. "Congress" isn't going anywhere, but specific people will be.

There isn't anything I disagree with in your comment. However, GOP support may not be necessary to shift Congress in 2008. The GOP swept into power in 1994 on a general anti-incumbent feeling (check-bouncing and such.)

Maybe the "throw the bums out" sentiment will translate to a Democrat in the White House and a Republican Congress. Clear the decks!
