Chuck gets a chuckle

Ah, yes, the notoriously biased New York Times.  I laughed too, Chuckles.

This is great news

They're really going to let their hatred of Trump overwhelm political common sense.  They're really so lost.

Also, is this picture real?  Something seems off about Schumer's tie.

Extra - Accurate headline: "Democrats to force shutdown to block spending levels set under Biden."  That's right: this is just a continuing resolution to keep spending levels set by the last budget.

C'mon man we all knew this was going to happen

Red State: "Nosedive! Jimmy Kimmel's Ratings Plunge to the Bottom of the Ocean After Return From Suspension."

I forget where I saw it but somebody in the entertainment industry predicted Kimmel's return and said the pain of low ratings is just slightly less than continuing the controversy and dealing with potential legal action.

At this point, what I would love more than anything is to see Ted Cruz or Scott Jennings as a guest on Kimmel's show to ask him exactly what he meant by his original statement.  It'll never happen but a boy can dream.

Shutdown theater

What a headline from the Boston Globe: "Trump’s shutdown blame game: Why he says Democrats are at fault."

Um...because they are?  The Democrats are trapped into this stupid and futile gesture because their base is at the gate with pitchforks.

Jeffrey Blehar is downright gleeful:
Meanwhile, everybody — and I do mean nearly every serious political commentator I can think of, including Democratic partisans, and most lawmakers grumbling behind the scenes — understands how self-defeatingly stupid it will be for Democrats to shut the government down. There is no “leader” of the “let’s shut down the government” movement on the left, no analogy to the role Cruz played. Instead, this is happening because the base demands it.

That is the rhetoric you are hearing from Democrats behind closed doors: We have to do something to show our voters we’re still fighting. Shorn of any actual ability to fight back – not because they lack legislative power, but because they lack ideological cohesion or mass appeal – they have chosen this in their powerlessness: a tantrum that will only result in their own ox being gored.
I see that both Schumer and Temu Obama will be on the Sunday morning news shows.  It will be interesting to see how they respond to opposition to a continuing resolution to simply keep the government running while the larger budget debate continues in the background.

Let them fight

Wikipedia: "In 2016, Strong married Emma Wall, a Danish psychiatrist; they had met four years earlier at a party in New York during Hurricane Sandy. They have three daughters. They live in New York and have homes in Copenhagen and Tisvilde."

Wow, it must be a terrible inconvenience for Strong to take a sailboat between New York and Copenhagen on a regular basis.

The Washington Post (!) crushes Kamala

I really don't have much interest in covering Kamala's long list of excuses collected in the book "107 Days."  But - damn - the Washington Post says Kamala has done us all a favor by demonstrating what an incompetent fool she is: "Kamala Harris’s one good deed."
A once and perhaps future presidential candidate should have a better grasp on what presidential leadership sounds like, even in a self-serving memoir. Instead, Harris creates the image of herself as an A student who tells interviewers her greatest weakness is that she’s just too much of a perfectionist.

The best that can be said about Harris’s step back into the spotlight is that it’s happening now. Democrats have a real shot at victory in 2028, but they won’t have time to waste on someone like the former vice president.
Man, that is ice cold.

One other comment: the entire premise of Kamala's current argument is that, gosh darn it, 107 days was just too short a time to wage a national campaign.  But the data show that Kamala was ahead of Trump in the polls almost up to election day and, the more time she spent in the public spotlight, the less Americans liked her.

New Jersey Senate race

Hot Air: "Oh, Holy Smokes - Jersey Mikie's Husband Part of Annapolis Cheating Scandal."

I'm getting a real Scott Brown-Martha Coakley vibe from this race.

Update - I realized after going to bed I should have explained this reference a little.  Scott Brown was the Republican candidate for a special election in Massachusetts and he was generally seen as a smart and charismatic guy.  But he was enormously helped by the Democrat candidate Martha Coakley who had little rapport with the voters and was viewed as standoffish and entitled.

Half a league onward

Into the Valley of Self-Destruction rode the Democrats: "Russ Vought’s Secret Shutdown Weapon." - "Put another way: Democrats will give the Trump team exactly what it’s been wanting—a shutdown—in return for Democrats’ continuing to demand something they will never get. What a deal. Even Faust got some worldly pleasure in exchange for a soul. This is trading hellfire for brimstone."

Another banger from Sasha Stone

This girl should have a national column: "Assassination Nation - The Democrats Need a Revival of Decency"
Having an insulated, isolated utopia where the rest of America is locked out allows everyone to play the part they want. E. Jean Carroll gets to pretend she was defamed and walk away with almost a hundred million. Jimmy Kimmel gets to pretend he’s a good guy, never meant to smear MAGA, and receives glowing headlines in the wake of it. Kamala Harris gets to pretend she ran a successful campaign, but America was too racist and sexist to vote for her.

I used to think this was our biggest problem, this two-tiered society, their castle in the sky. But after Charlie, now, it is so much worse than that. Why can’t they see what they’ve become? Why can’t they see where it has taken us?

Perhaps it was the immense outpouring of love for Charlie, the overwhelming grief of so many people, and the admiration for the impressive movement he built, which helped change the country and elect a president, that made them feel a little bit jealous.

They don’t have anyone like that on the Left because they can’t do what Charlie did. They can’t have conversations with people they see as “Nazis.”
I don't think I mentioned this but a couple weeks back I went to Northampton - the Berkeley of the East - to a "forum" on immigration.  I am 100% sure I was the only person in this church who wanted to shut down the border and curb illegal immigration.  There was absolutely no discussion to be had here about the potential downsides of an open border.  Instead it was a bunch of left-wing greyheads who wanted to cosplay the Woodstock generation and congratulate themselves on their stunning and brave "resistance."

After the hour-long comparison to the Underground Railroad, I stepped up to the mic to ask some questions and it was immediately obvious that I was the skunk at the garden party.  They didn't want a discussion - they wanted a monologue.

To her credit, the pastor thanked me for my comments and I think she was sincere.  But otherwise it was just another afternoon of virtue signaling here in the Pioneer Valley.

Comey indicted

Legal Insurrection: "James Comey Indicted" - "Former FBI Director has been indicted for giving false statements and obstruction of a congressional proceeding."

I'm not so sure about this indictment but this seems to be the crux of the perjury charge

Update - My go-to legal guy Andrew McCarthy is not impressed

You got 'em now, boys!

The Corner: "Democrats Prepare to March into a Box Canyon by Shutting Down the Government."

I don't think even the biased media can cover up that, by rejecting a continuing resolution, the Democrats would be shutting down the government.  Trump is all but daring them to do so and Schumer seems prepared to throw him into that brier patch.

Poor Chuck: either fight this unwinnable fight or lose to AOC in the next election.

ABC decides to keep losing money

PJ Media: "Jimmy Kimmel to Return to the Airwaves Tuesday Night."

Well, I was wrong about his return but I don't see how he can come back without a public apology.  IIRC this was one of the demands from the Sinclair Media group to regain its affiliates.

Update - The Wrap: "Sinclair Will Not Air ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Upon ABC Return Tuesday - The broadcaster, which has demanded an apology and Turning Point USA donation from the late-night host, will replace the time slot with local news programming."

So far, Nexstar is "no comment."  Hmmm.

The Left normalizes violence

Remember this delightful article from July?  Axios: "Democrats told to "get shot" for the anti-Trump resistance."
"Our own base is telling us that what we're doing is not good enough ... [that] there needs to be blood to grab the attention of the press and the public," the lawmaker said.

A fourth House Democrat said constituents have told them "civility isn't working" and to prepare for "violence ... to fight to protect our democracy."
In between the Tik Toks celebrating the murder of Charlie Kirk, we have polls and stories about the assassination culture of the Left and the rationalization for violence.

The Charlie Kirk memorial

I watched most of it when I wasn't trying to get dinner together and I agree with most everything written here on Power Line, especially this:
The memorial was overwhelmingly a religious, not political, event. Thus, the climax came when Erika said that she forgave her husband’s murderer, as Jesus forgave those who crucified him. It was a moment of extraordinary emotional and intellectual power. But, speaking for myself, I will never forgive the liberals who created the conditions for the murder of Charlie Kirk, and many other evils.
That was a powerful - even jarring - moment.  Erika Kirk said that Charlie was dedicated to reaching out to the lost young men in America...like his assassin.  And she forgave him.

As a Christian I should agree with Erika Kirk.  But it's hard.

Buh bye now

Fox News: "Jimmy Kimmel is on the fast train to Keith Olbermann-style oblivion - Late-night host reportedly turned down bosses' request to apologize for on-air comments about Charlie Kirk case."

There was a rumor that ABC was trying to compromise with Kimmel to bring him back but I don't believe it for a second.  I think Disney/ABC/affiliates understand how toxic he is now.  They'll make some pro forma comments about reconciliation but they're not going to bring him back because, as I said before, his ego will never allow it.

Biden talking about Biden is Biden's thing

I'm really not interested in Kamala Harris's self-serving book but this story made me laugh.  Joe Biden called Kamala right before her debate with Trump and started talking about himself:
Biden then went on to talk about his past debate performances, leaving Harris confused, "angry and disappointed," according to The Guardian. She was upset that her boss had called before a critical moment in her political career and made "it all about himself."
Can you imagine listening to Biden talk about debating after his total implosion with Trump?  But then talking about himself is Biden's defining characteristic.  My favorite is when he traveled to Maui to "console" Lahaina residents who had lost their homes and 114 lives to wildfires.  He understood their plight because he almost lost his '67 Corvette once.

Captain Empathy, that's Biden.

North Korean propaganda

Twitchy: "CNN Host Plays Video of What Kimmel Said, Then Tries to Convince Us We Didn't Just Hear What We Heard."

This level of gaslighting is unreal.  Have these people have no shame?  The mainstream media is intent on proving they're left-wing hacks in cheap suits.

It was never about the FCC

Wall Street Journal: "Inside Disney’s Abrupt Decision to Suspend Jimmy Kimmel’s Show - The late-night host wanted to address the firestorm over his remarks about Charlie Kirk’s killing on Wednesday’s show. Company leaders worried it would make matters worse."
Advertisers and affiliates soon called the network expressing concern about Kimmel’s show. Executives at Sinclair and Nexstar, owners of more than 60 local ABC stations, told network leaders after Carr’s remarks that they would “indefinitely preempt” the show starting that night, moves that would hobble the program’s reach.

Kimmel had planned to address Carr’s comments on his show Wednesday night, according to people familiar with the matter. Before his on-air appearance, Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, spoke to the host about his plan, the people said.

After the conversation between Kimmel and Walden, she and other senior executives thought that the star’s approach could make the situation worse, people familiar with their conversations said.
Kimmel's approach was to offer no apology and to blame MAGA for "twisting his words."  One-hundred percent this would have made the situation worse.  In my opinion, Kimmel can't return without an apology and his ego won't allow it, so he's done.  Rest in peace, wheezy!

Extra fun - The moving trucks have arrived and they're silently clearing out Kimmel's studio.  Bye now!

Jimmy Kimmel, like Stephen Colbert, like John Oliver, hasn’t been funny in years. He’s been nothing more than a Court Jester for the ruling class.

Hollywood is a sinking ship and has been for a long time. They destroyed themselves trying to destroy Trump. Maybe seeing Kimmel canned will help thaw them out and get them back to sanity. Then again, probably not. If even the political assassination seen by millions doesn’t shake them out of it, nothing will.

Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk. Good riddance, Jimmy Kimmel.
It's been noted that Trump revealed the true nature of these Hollywood jerks but Charlie Kirk really shows they have no sense of humanity.

NY Post: "Late-night TV is truly dead — and you can only blame egotistical, politically obsessed Kimmel and Colbert themselves."

ABC pulls Kimmel

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy: "Disney's ABC pulls 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' after FCC chair criticizes the host's Charlie Kirk comments."
Disney's ABC said "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" will be "pre-empted indefinitely," a spokesperson confirmed to NBC News, after the late night host's Monday monologue about conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was giving a presentation at Utah Valley University when he was fatally shot last week.

During his monologue Monday, Kimmel raised the possibility that the alleged assassin Tyler Robinson might have been a pro-Trump Republican.
The levels of victimhood and self-martyrdom by Kimmel for this will eclipse Colbert's cancelling.

Now do the View, ABC!

Extra - Breitbart: "Gutfeld: Kimmel is done for calling 'kid who murdered Charlie Kirk' MAGA."  Wow, he totally called it a couple hours before it was announced.

More - It looks like Nexstar Media told ABC they refused to broadcast Kimmel's show on their affiliates and the network pulled the show.

Prediction - This is my opinion: Kimmel is done.  He won't be back because any kind of return would involve 1) admitting he was wrong and/or 2) bowing to the network's pressure.  His ego won't allow it.

Real Clear Politics: "Capehart: "I Am Very Concerned" About What The Reaction To Charlie Kirk's Assassination Will Be."
But because of who the victim was, just in terms of our politics, but also who he was in terms of the president and this administration, this is one thing that I have to factor in to my thinking about all this when I look at the reaction from the president and his administration, that this just this wasn't just the murder of someone who was a like-minded person.

This was family to them. And I try to keep that in mind as I watch the reaction. But I have to tell you, I am very concerned about what that reaction is going to be in the days and weeks and months ahead.
These media ass-hats are always like Jane Goodall watching these strange creatures called "conservatives."  What will they do?  Is that the practice called "praying?"  How odd!

Suddenly, speech isn't violence.  For some reason: "When Words No Longer Matter: Nancy Pelosi and Politics of Violence"
It appears that words no longer matter to Nancy Pelosi. For years, Pelosi and other Democrats have blamed President Donald Trump and Republicans for their “inciteful rhetoric.” In seeking Trump’s impeachment, Pelosi bellowed that the use of “words such as a cry ‘to fight like hell'” produces violence and added, “words matter. Truth matters. Accountability matters.” No longer. After all, she explained, “we can’t take responsibility for the minds that are out there and how they hear it.”

The dumbest restraining order in legal history

Hot Air: "Appeals Court Overrules Judge Talwani: Planned Parenthood's Funding Can Be Cut."

We've covered this before but this was a judge who declared that budgetary legislation passed by Congress could not cut funding to Planned Parenthood.  As a legal matter, this had already been decided by the Supreme Court.  The injunction was a complete mess:
Judge Indira Talwani has delivered what may be one of the most questionable judicial decisions in recent memory—and that’s saying something given the current judicial climate. Her handling of the Planned Parenthood funding case is a textbook case of judicial overreach...

Let’s start with the obvious: Planned Parenthood has no constitutional right to taxpayer funding. None. Yet Talwani attempted an elaborate workaround, invoking the “unconstitutional conditions doctrine” to argue that funding restrictions violated Planned Parenthood’s freedom of association.

This argument falls apart under scrutiny. Talwani cited no precedent supporting her theory that similar funding conditions violate associational rights. That’s because there isn’t any.
This is an Obama judge in Massachusetts, just making up legal arguments from whole cloth.  The Appeals court slapped it down as "flimsy" which was probably kind.

The theater kids are at it again

Hot Air: "Shutdown Chatter Growing Louder on the Left."
My own guess is that it's going to happen this time. Democrats shut down the government in Texas a few weeks ago and while that achieved nothing in Texas it won them lots of applause around the country from left-wing media outlets and progressives. Beyond that, I can't imagine Sen. Schumer caving again this time after the beating he took last time. He'll have to show some willingness to fight even if it makes no sense.
I agree with this: Schumer took an absolute shellacking at the last budget showdown and there's no way he's going to do it again without some token "fight."  It will last a couple of weeks, long enough for the Democrats to claim they took a stand, without stemming any real spending.

How is Chicago a thing?

Jonathan Turley: "A Bill Comes Due: Chicago’s Johnson and Teacher’s Union Lose Fight for Loan to Sustain Bloated Budget."
In the meantime, Chicago is now facing a $1.15 billion shortfall and Johnson is calling for increasing taxes on the wealthy and businesses despite the fact that Chicago is losing both businesses and residents. The incoming citizens are largely immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, in the sanctuary city. That has driven expenditures even higher for the city while it loses businesses and residents needed for its tax base.

As a Chicagoan, I have no illusions about the city politics. There has never been reasonable fiscal policies in the city in my lifetime. However, Johnson has moved from the dismissive to delusional in ignoring the economic realities growing in the city.
I don't understand how these cities are allowed to rack up so much debt and push their bond rating into junk status.  There is never a plan for fiscal sanity - just more borrowing.

Well, well, well, look at this development

We were just talking about CBS.  WSJ: "‘Face the Nation’ to Air Only Unedited Interviews After Administration Criticism - Kristi Noem claimed that her recent appearance on the CBS show was selectively edited."

Honestly, Bari Weiss should fire Margaret Brennan.  She turned "Face the Nation" into a clown show.

The Corner: "CBS Is Rethinking Its Life Choices."
What’s interesting, and suggests a broader rethinking of the future of CBS, is that this comes six weeks after Paramount and CBS pulled the plug on The Late Show and sacked its host, Stephen Colbert. Taken together, the two moves imply that an ossified, closed-minded, smug, and unreflective liberalism just doesn’t have a future in attracting a mass audience in today’s shifting media landscape. Maybe nobody does, and maybe a benefit of bringing in Bari Weiss, like a benefit of ending The Late Show rather than recasting its host, is simply to cut costs by eliminating a whole lot of well-compensated people who have been working on money-losing ventures for the network for a long time. But either way, this may not be your grandpa’s CBS for very much longer.

Collective madness

The always-great Sasha Stone: "Trump Derangement Syndrome: The Movie - The Democrats are in a hell of their own making, Part Three"
Trump Derangement Syndrome has all but collapsed the empire, with Hollywood barely clinging to life, network television hemorrhaging viewers, and a rising counterculture movement they can’t keep up with. Their jokes aren’t funny. Their movies are unwatchable. Their moral superiority is unbearable.
