This is obviously the NYT trying to get ahead of the Politico story. Here's the statement: "For anyone who understands the role of the free press in a democracy, it should be troubling that President Biden has so actively and effectively avoided questions from independent journalists during his term."
He can't do it.
Also: Biden won't debate.

Oof, excellent timing. Both on the independent questioning and the prospect of Biden ducking debates the way Trump did a half-dozen times.
The Hill (and dozens of other outlets):
Biden joins Howard Stern for live interview
The New York Times:
Biden, Asked if He's Planning to Debate Trump, Says 'I Am'
The Hill, again:
Biden says he’s ‘happy’ to debate Trump
Trump has for weeks pledged to debate Biden “any time, any place,” despite his refusal to participate in the GOP primary debates and his past hostility toward the Commission on Presidential Debates.
The former president has frequently railed against the commission, pointing to a technical issue with his microphone during a 2016 debate, complaining about moderators and blasting a decision to cancel a debate with Biden in 2020 after Trump tested positive for COVID-19 and refused to participate virtually.
But keep picking at that 2020 "Biden will not debate" scab.
Robert J. DeNault:
"Biden doing a live interview with Howard Stern the day after the New York Times put out a bizarre screed attempting to justify its stream of negative stories about Biden because he won’t do an interview with them is the America I want to live in."
Nothing says "I'm eager and mentally competent to engage in combative debate with Trump," like sitting for the softest of softball interviews with Trump-hating Howard Stern.
Ah, yes. As opposed to Trump being grilled by Tucker Carlson. And the hard-boiled inquisitors on Newsmax.
And Sean "You didn't really mean the thing you explicitly said, did you, Mr. President?" Hannity.
Remember when then-President Trump was going to annihilate the stammering gaffe machine Sleepy Joe in their 2020 debates?
But lost both of the debates instead? And did a quick "RUN, Forrest, RUN!" exit from the third?
