On a cost effective basis, funding Amtrak is cheaper than subsidizing roads. (Obviously we need to do both.)
Trains are also a better investment when it comes to air pollution, global warming and resource consumption, each of which has a measurable impact on subsequent federal spending. (Obviously American life requires both.)
Highways will always appear more profitable than transit because they outsource much more of their operational costs to the user than trains do. (Obviously they're both still worth it.)
