No contest First off, I was pretty down on President Bush’s performance on the first debate, so I’m not a knee-jerk cheerleader. Second, instead of live-blogging I decided to watch the whole debate before commenting to get the full effect. Third, oh, forget it: Bush kicked Kerry’s ass tonight! Bush was forceful without grasping (like the first debate). He was confident and resolute. Kerry seemed intent on answering every question with an avalanche of barely-relevant statistics before attacking the administration. Oh, but he has a “plan.” Look at the transcripts tomorrow: every time Kerry talked about his plans, he would do everything but reveal the details of any plan. And finally! Bush hit Kerry on his anemic Senate career where he did nothing to address all these pressing issues facing the country. Kerry and trial-lawyer Edwards want tort reform? Sure, sure they do. Hilarious moment: in Kerry’s (non-rebuttal) closing statement, he said he would never cede America’s control to a foreign power or entity…after spending 90 minutes saying exactly the opposite! President Bush won hands down.
Comments:
I have a theory. I'm no political expert, so...be kind.
Karl Rove and George Bush knew the MSM's "Comeback Kerry" stories were written long before the first debate. Their own polls told them Zogby, AP, Ipso and the other alphabet pollsters had gone deep in the bag for Kerry in September, inflating Bush's numbers and setting up the "comeback". My theory - they took the expectations game and turned it on its head. They designed a strategy for ALL the debates, not just each debate. My scenerio - Bush doesn't perform near expectations in the first debate, confirming the agitprop that's already written and the MSM is gleeful; but he eliminates any expectations for the second debate - he can't go anywhere but up. For the second debate, where else can the polls go unless he shows up drunk and babbling? Even a slightly credible performance means the artificial inflation has to be washed out - it can't be fudged any more without everyone noticing. Bush has a guaranteed COMEBACK! The perceived momentum shifts, the story has to become, "How does Kerry catch up?", or the MSM loses even more credibility. Kerry comes into the third debate angry and desperate to score - easy meat. Well...it's a theory.
Thank you!
