About 25 years ago, when I lived in Richfield, MN, one of the radio show hosts said that Minneapolis schools were spending a bit more than $10,000 a year per student. I did a quick check, a my high school - a private college prep school - currently cost $10,000 a year - and that included room & board!!!
They are one of the top college prep schools in the country with usually all of the seniors going on to college or one of the military academies. (The few that don't die in accidents.) The price per year for that school has gone up drastically since then as they found that people weren't considering them an option because "It can't be that good if that's all it costs!" But the students get an education that is worth what they are paying for - which isn't the case with most public schools.

There are some public schools in Baltimore spending >$30K for some of the worst scores in the country.
