They start up at random times during the day, and if these devices are starved of power during startup, they can be damaged.
Your generator should be big enough to comfortably handle the combined surges of whatever you connect to it.

It's funny you should say that because when the refrigerator finally kicked in, the generator gave a high-pitched whine.
