The increase in shootings has occurred along with a 50% decline in arrests since the charging of six officers in Gray's death in custody. The heavy police presence in crime-ridden neighborhoods is no longer apparent with one resident stating, "Before it was over-policing. Now there's no police." One officer speaking anonymously stated, "After the protests, it seems like the citizens would appreciate a lack of police presence, and that's exactly what they're getting." Batts stated that his officers are "not holding back" despite encountering hostility in the Western District whenever they make an arrest with "30 to 50 people surrounding them at any time;" he also stated that his officers feel "confused and unsupported" in the wake of the charges. The president of the police union said his members are "afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly."And the results: "Baltimore breaks city record for killings per capita in 2019" and "At this rate, Baltimore is on pace for 286 murders in 2020. At this point last year, the city was on pace for 284."

But just imagine how bad things would be if they had voted Republicans into power.
They're about to elect former mayor Sheila Dixon, who was charged with felonies but plead out to a misdemeanor.
You fellas must love and admire Bill De Blasio and New York City, then. Just look at the results.
If Baltimore is the future of policing in major cities, New York is 14 or 15 futures of policing in major cities.
I have to admit, Mayor Wilhelm handles his policing duties like no one else.
And not everyone shares the admiration you're shopping regarding The Mayor, with Cuomo himself threatening to personally take over his job because of Wilhelm's ineptness. But if he's removed, I'm sure there must be 14 or 15 other cities who would snap him up to get a little of that New York magic.
Thought it was about per capita murder rates in big cities?
Take it up with the governor. Maybe he'll reconsider.
America would be safer if it was more like New York City. That's impossible to dispute.
I wonder whether the per capita murder rate in your town is one too low?
Ordinarily, I would object to someone fantasizing about my murder, but in your case I know it's a confession of utter failure.
That's not true. I once crossed a street and held up a book, which means I'm very dominating strong winning.
If you feel scared about your local crime rate, just move to the Big Apple. The liberal mecca's incredible improvement in crime stats is just one more reason why the entire world recognizes NYC as the embodiment of what America strives to be.
