For all the sharp elbows of the last year, they appear to have concluded that the best way to deal with a disruptive president is to court him, particularly since they still hope to engage the United States on thorny issues like the war in Ukraine.“We’re on the same team,” Mr. Merz said of the president on social media, wishing him a belated happy 80th birthday.Such conciliatory words would have seemed improbable even a week ago, given the bitter split over Iran, Mr. Trump’s threats to take over Greenland and his regular hectoring of Europe’s centrist leaders — all of which persuaded several of them that America was no longer an ally, and was even, in some cases, a threat. Now, though, Mr. Trump has presented at least the contours of a peace deal with Iran, and Europe’s leaders have gone back to charming him.
Because they want something. Make no mistake: I didn't care about Europe's opinion back when they hated Trump.

I wonder what they could possibly want?
Just kidding, we all know. They want money. As Marco Rubio said here a couple of weeks ago to congress:
https://youtu.be/dPRJosPAtDU?si=WJuGd7tIyWLbAzbP&t=305
To paraphrase "They've spent on robust social programs at the expense of defense because they've relied on the US, and they don't want to cut programs or raise taxes."
So basically, they want our money to keep their political jobs because obviously raising taxes or taking away "free stuff" makes voters accustomed to it angry.
The entire video is worth a watch, but I started at the Rubio saying the quiet part out loud part.
So basically, the US is subsidizing the "free healthcare" that the Euros (and Canada) like to hold over our heads as them being "better than us", and when we ask just to use a base that we paid for to go against Iran, they say no to keep their jew hating terrorist supporting voters happy.
So naturally the administration is putting them in a hard spot. Pay for their own defense or we'll remove our troops. They won't even let us use the bases anyway, not because they don't realize Iran is a problem, but because they are worried about all the immigrant votes they will lose.
Naturally, they are trying to brown nose Trump in the few days before the G7 summit. Stupidly, massaging Trump's ego works.
Lastly, the NATO charter requires each country spend a certain percentage of their GDP on defense, and many NATO countries have intentionally breaking their promise to NATO for decades.
They want all the goodies, but none of the commitments. They are like the gold digging girlfriend who sticks around for the free dinners and gifts, but doesn't love you and will leave the instant the gravy train ends.
