He had to do it early because Hunter's sentencing was coming up this month. The pardon would have still worked after the sentencing, of course, but it would have made more obvious the massive "up yours" Biden was giving to the whole notion of justice in America. Not even so much for the gun and tax convictions, but for the blanket pardon of any other crimes, discovered or yet undiscovered, that Hunter committed at his leisure during the past 10 years. Most of which were committed in cahoots with the Big Guy.
As a reminder: Hunter was about to start his tax evasion trial and suddenly plead guilty. Why? Because he needed the issue resolved in time to get the pardon.

I figured it would happen on January 19th, his staff probably forgot to tell him it was just December.
