Too late, they realized their mistake

Ross Douthat in the NY Times: "Why the Manhattan trial is probably helping Trump."
I defer to those analysts on what New York state legal precedent suggests. But I would defy anyone to summarize the underlying situation, in which a presidential candidate could be sent to prison for a misdemeanor offense elevated by a second crime for which he isn’t even being charged, without the description coming across as somewhat Kafkaesque.
We warned that charging Trump for a bookkeeping dispute would turn him into a martyr and now the laughable nature of this case is doing just that.  Great job, guys!

I can't make sense of this stupid article

Here's Democrat operative Symone Sanders LARPing as a journalist with "Democrats need to counter Trump's courthouse campaign."

The theme here seems to be that the Trump trial is creating a media circus that is sucking the oxygen away from all the great work the Biden administration is doing:
Trump’s indictments are historic and should be covered vigorously by the media. But minuscule details of the trial threaten to obscure developments out of the executive branch that affect the lives of millions of Americans.
If only we could track down the people who have generated this black hole of attention around Trump!

Furthermore, nobody's stopping you from getting your message out, Symone.  The idiot White House press secretary gave five press conferences this week.  Dementia Joe even sat down for interviews with CNN and Yahoo recently.  The problem (for you) is that Americans have tuned out the constant gaslighting about the economy.

Go ahead and spread the great news.  Nobody's stopping you.  Here, let me help: "Biden’s $7.5 billion investment in EV charging has only produced 7 stations in two years."

Awesome job.  The adults are back in charge!

He added, "Yes, I think, if I was a juror in this case, watching that, I would think this guy's making this up as he's going along or he's making this particular story up."
Cohen is the prosecution's star and final witness.  The defense hasn't even started yet!  If the judge had any scruples, he would throw out this silly case with a directed verdict.

Know how I know?  His debate announcement video: "Biden mocked over number of jump cuts in Trump debate challenge video: ‘Like a Claymation film’."

I've seen quite a few articles online questioning why Trump agreed to Dementia Joe's terms for the debates including picking left-loving CNN to moderate.  My feeling is that Trump is calculating - correctly - that Biden can't speak extemporaneously anymore.  Every public appearance by Dementia Joe is assisted with teleprompters and note cards and occasionally the Easter Bunny.   Whenever Biden is deprived of his crutches, it's a disaster and the only thing that saves him is that journalists are too deferential to call him a liar.

Donald Trump won't be so deferential.  Biden won't debate.

Biden won't debate

Red State: "Joe Biden Tells Inflation Whopper Again, As His Campaign Continues to Crash and Burn."

Here's the transcript from Yahoo Finance.  Dynamo Joe fielded a grand total of three questions, didn't answer two of them, and completely lied on the third by repeating the inflation falsehood.

Jim Geraghty estimates there are three scenarios to explain why Biden lies about inflation (among many other things): 1) he knows he's lying, 2) he was told he lied but already forgot or 3) he wasn't told he lied.  I believe this last scenario:
Another possibility is that Biden misremembers the inflation rate when he took office, said so publicly, and no one around the president has told him, “Mr. President, when you took office, the inflation rate was just 1.4 percent, you can’t go around claiming that it was 9 percent.” Meaning we have a president who operates in a fog of half-truths and illusory claims that reflect the way he wishes things had happened, and no one around the president sees any point in correcting him.
It's just easier to let Dementia Joe mis-remember the awesome job he did then give him some ice cream.

Can you imagine a debate with Trump where these obvious lies are called out in real time?  It would be the bloodbath we were promised.

Architects of their own destruction

Don Surber: "We don't want journalism back"
Do we really want the dingbats and dingleberries that Kahn described as the people who decide what is news and what the facts are? When I was a youngun, a wise newspaperman explained to me that the power of the press belongs to the man who owns the presses. NYT and the rest abused that power. We will not give it back to them.

Thus the answer to Taibbi’s question “Is Journalism Back?” is no. Journalists abandoned objectivity. Readers have decided that they do not want the journalists back.
The largest paper in Western Massachusetts has not run a single editorial with Joe Biden as the topic in an entire year.  For four years, every week (at least) the same paper inveighed against Orange Man Bad.

You can probably guess which half

Reason: "Nearly Half of All Masters Degrees Aren't Worth Getting - According to new research, 23 percent of bachelor's degree programs and 43 percent of master's degree programs have a negative ROI."
However, different kinds of degrees were more likely to have a negative ROI than others. For example, 77 percent of bachelor's degrees and doctoral and professional degrees have a positive ROI. In contrast, just 57 percent of master's and associate degree programs have a positive ROI.
Story time: a couple years ago, I felt my career in engineering had hit a dead-end so I went back to school to get a master's degree.  This degree was a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management.

Know what kind of degrees have a positive return on investment (ROI)?

1) Engineering
2) Management

and ipso facto

3) Engineering Management

For me, it was a great investment and enhanced my career.  So YMMV but thumbs-up for me.

That CNN interview was...something

Hot Air: "Joe Biden's Really Bad, Truly Terrible Interview on CNN."

This was the interview where Biden decided to abandon Israel: "Biden Commits To Saving Hamas, Will Cut Off Offensive Weapons To Israel If It Enters Rafah."  Because - hey - those votes in Dearborn, Michigan ain't gonna buy themselves.

On the homefront, Biden lied relentlessly about the economy.

As somebody who follows Dementia Joe's speeches with some regularity, I can tell you that he uses the same rationalizations and prevarications with predictable reliability.  As a journalist - even a CNN journalist - interviewer Erin Burnett should have been prepared for Biden's lies.  I'm not even talking about statements that can be open to interpretation (such as, say, Trump saying there will be a "bloodbath" if he's not elected).  I'm talking about hard numbers, immutable history, and cold facts.

So, once again, I'm disappointed at the mainstream media that allows Biden to say that inflation was 9% when he took office.  This is completely untrue and just one of the ways Biden tries to weasel out of any responsibility for his terrible economic record.   And yet, Burnett did not push back.  At all.

This is why I hate the mainstream media.  These clowns love to wrap themselves in the "truth to power" mantra until the truth will embarrass a Democrat.

A hard rain is gonna fall

Hot Air: "Social Security Has About One Decade Left."

That is, about ten years from now, the automatic benefit cuts kick in leading to a reduction of 21% in promised benefits.  There is a general belief that a "grand bargain" will be reached but it would be my preference that any reform of the Social Security system is accompanied by partial privatization similar to the personal accounts in the Australian superannuation system

Government-controlled programs like Social Security and pensions (looking at you, Detroit) can disappear but personally-controlled retirement programs can't be touched.

KJP is an idiot

One of my favorite YouTubers has a new video on the inept White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and he picks up on the exact same question I highlighted on Saturday about the sunsetting Trump tax cuts.  The answer wasn't in KJP's enormous binder and she's incapable of ad-libbing an intelligent answer so the result is a complete mess.  To be clear.  Enjoy:

Rewarding the mob

This is just disgraceful: "Columbia University Cancels Main Commencement Ceremony After Protests."

Imagine working years for your degree and then you can't even celebrate the day with your friends and family.  What a bunch of entitled jerks.

That unbearable airhead KJP

Here she is in action, "answering" a press question about the Trump tax cuts which Dementia Joe said he will allow to expire:
Q    Thanks, Karine.  So, the President says that he wants to let the tax cuts — the Trump tax cuts expire.  If that law expires, it does raise taxes on almost every American.  So, does he still support that expiring without anything else in place?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE:  So, look, the — as you said, the President is going to allow — is going to — is — is going to let the Trump tax cut expire.  And he was very clear.  But he will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 a year.  That is — that is part of the budget that you saw come out.  And it’s going to expire for the wealthy.  So, been very clear about that.

You know, look, this is a president that’s going to make sure that we protect and not raise taxes for — for people making $400,000 and less a year.

And — and Republicans want to do the opposite.  They want to give tax breaks to corporations and billionaires.  They’ve said that.  They want to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.  Who does that hurt?  That hurts everyday Americans.

And so, the President has been really clear about that.  He wants to expand Affordable Care Act, as you see him doing that, for Americans — making sure that they have good healthcare.  And so, that’s what the President is — is going to focus on.

Q    But still, the President can’t pick and choose which part of the law sunsets.  The entire law will sunset.  And the — the Tax Foundation says that someone who’s married, two kids, making $85,000 would pay $1,700 more in taxes.  That’s somebody under $400,000 who would —

MS. JEAN-PIERRE:  The President has been very clear.  He’s going to protect working- — working- and middle-class Americans making less than $400,000 a year.  He’s been very clear on th- — about that.
Despite repeating the word "clear," this is as clear as mud.  The law is going to expire and everybody's taxes are going to go up.

But...Republicans.

The Hill: "Biden to deliver speech on antisemitism at Holocaust memorial ceremony."

No wonder they tried to fire her

Like ragging on AOC, it's low-hanging fruit to criticize White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.  She's just awful.

Today, I got the impression - a very clear impression (KJP joke here!) - that even the White House press corps is getting pretty sick of her s--t.  She was asked in several different ways why Biden hasn't made a public statement on the nationwide college protests and KJP just refuses to answer while padding her responses with more vapid filler than a junior high student trying to meet a word count target on an essay.

Kafka trap

Former AUSA Andrew McCarthy: "Bragg’s Prosecution of Trump Violates New York State’s Constitution."

Briefly: the charge that business records were falsified in pursuance of "another crime" can't say "none of your business" when you ask what that crime might be.  "That’s a fatal problem because New York State’s constitution mandates that a statute must spell out any statutory terms it is incorporating. Under Article III, §16, of the state constitution, incorporation by reference is not permitted."

Good question: why don't you bring your facts to Hannity, Joe?

Red State: "Biden Brings Obama, Clinton for Podcast Interview, They Still Manage to Mess Up and Diss Americans."

It looks like Presidents Obama, Clinton, and Biden appeared on the "Smartless" podcast and it was just released yesterday.  As expected, it was a slobbering, fangirl lovefest but host Jason Bateman asked a very good question...that never got answered.
You could see it during one question asked by Bateman. He asked if it could be as simple as Biden going on Sean Hannity and asking him why the people who follow him don't think Biden is good at the job.

"Just answer his questions, call his bluff," Bateman huffed. "I mean the information, the facts are all there," he claimed. "Particularly for that group of people. What you do is so much better suited than what the other agenda is talking about. Is it just a matter of getting on that network. I don't get it."
Excellent question.  If all the facts are on your side and there's just so much disinformation out there, why not go on Fox News, refute the lies, and defend your stellar record?  Call the bluff, man!

Can you imagine?  Anyway, thanks for the laugh, Jason.  Loved you in the criminally-underrated "It's Your Move."

Biden won't debate

Wall Street Journal: "Biden Says He’ll Debate Trump. When? - Trump claims the President isn’t up to the job. If Biden shuns debates, voters might conclude Trump is right."
Since Mr. Biden took office, according to Politico, he has given interviews to only two print reporters. He speaks only to friendly venues like Mr. Stern’s radio show. (We’re available for an interview on foreign or economic policy, sir.) Meanwhile, Axios reported Friday that Mr. Biden no longer walks solo to Marine One on the White House lawn. Instead he’s surrounded by a phalanx of aides because advisers worry that “videos of Biden walking and shuffling alone—especially across the grass—have highlighted his age.”
Dementia Joe has created a huge problem for his campaign because most Americans expect Presidential debates and pulling out after committing to a debate would look weak.  But the alternative is a forum where Biden can't use notecards or depend on a teleprompter, so that's definitely not an option.

The question isn't when Biden will debate.  It's when will one of his campaign flunkies release a statement with the excuse.

Clown show update

PJ Media: "This New York City Prosecution of Trump Is a Dangerous Legal Jenga Game for Democrats." - "The New York City trial of former President Donald Trump has ended its second week in a heap of confusion.  The question is the same now as when the charges were announced years after the alleged "criminal" bookkeeping acts occurred: Dude, where's the case?

This won't happen

Townhall: "Biden Responds to Trump's Challenge to Debate Before November."

I'll tell you exactly what this is: Biden's ego getting ahead of his sense.  He has much too high of an opinion of himself to ever think he couldn't go toe-to-toe with Trump.  His campaign will walk this back on some flimsy pretense when crunch time comes.

Biden won't debate.

Why did it have to fail?

The New York Times eviscerates Dementia Joe

Hey, maybe they are the enemy of this White House!  "Shocker: NY Times Absolutely Shreds Joe Biden for Hiding From the Media."

This is obviously the NYT trying to get ahead of the Politico story.  Here's the statement: "For anyone who understands the role of the free press in a democracy, it should be troubling that President Biden has so actively and effectively avoided questions from independent journalists during his term."

He can't do it.

Imagine thinking the NY Times is the enemy

Politico: "The Petty Feud Between the NYT and the White House."

My favorite part of this article is how the NY Times wants a sit-down interview with the President, a tradition that dates back to FDR, and the White House response is: "hey, we've done two sit-down interviews in three years!"

Absolutely brilliant

There are a lot of inside jokes here and you need an above-average knowledge of recent NFL history but - damn - this is funny:

The revenge of Tulsi Gabbard

Banana republic clown show

Ringside at the Reckoning: "How bad is Alvin Bragg's Manhattan prosecution? - Worse than you thought, because it will do more long-term damage than you thought."

In case you missed it, these charges are based on Trump lying to his own account register to commit a "crime" in 2017 to interfere in the 2016 election.
It’s worth noting that federal Special Counsel Jack Smith, no one’s version of a wallflower, chose not to go after Trump for the supposed federal campaign finance violation.

If this matter did not so seriously threaten our faith in law, I’d have to laugh, honestly. This really is like putting someone on trial for lying to his diary.
And, by the way, it's interesting that this prosecution for something that happened seven years ago is just now making its way to a courtroom, right in the middle of the Presidential campaign season.

Must be a coincidence.

Democrats lie - repeatedly - about inflation

Defund NPR

USA Today: "NPR editor quit after telling the truth about liberal bias in media. It's time to defund them. - NPR in recent years has gone from being something I enjoy to something that more often than not leaves me shaking my head."

This NY Times editorial is something else

And yet oh-so typical for the Times: "Donald Trump and American justice."
The former and possibly future president of the United States is now on trial in Lower Manhattan, the first criminal prosecution of an American elected to the nation’s highest office. Donald Trump, who relentlessly undermined the justice system while in office and since, is enjoying the same protections and guarantees of fairness and due process before the law that he sought to deny to others during his term.
How did Trump undermine justice as President?  The editorial never deigns to explain or offer any examples.  It's just taken as a given.

This is what it's like in the groupthink bubble where a dissenting viewpoint is not allowed.

Biden won't debate

The talking points are out and the trial balloons have been launched!

Boston Globe: "Have presidential debates outlived their usefulness? - There are better ways for the public to hear from presidential candidates. I say good riddance to the televised presidential debate."

The Atlantic: "Why Biden Should Not Debate Trump - The networks want their show, but to give the challenger equal status on a TV stage would be a dire normalization of his attempted coup."

Biden is free to make any decision he likes, but those who oppose Trump shouldn’t fool themselves about the way many voters will interpret a decision like that. If the 81-year-old Biden refuses to participate in debates later this year, many Americans will conclude that it’s because he’s too old and that either he or his staff fears what Biden would say, or how he would appear, over the course of three 90-minute presidential debates. Yes, Biden looked fired up in his most recent State of the Union address, but in the end, all Biden had to do was read off a teleprompter and pause for applause. Debates are much tougher, and the opportunities for gaffes and unflattering moments are plentiful.
My feeling is that the Biden camp has already made the decision not to debate based on the fact that they skipped the traditional Super Bowl interview and generally keeps Dementia Joe away from any unscripted moments.

Biden won't debate.

Extra - Althouse: "We're not supposed to read Biden's refusal to debate to mean that he lacks the mental capacity to debate. Frum and others will instruct us, repeatedly, in articles repeating the talking point."

Red-pilled Bill Maher

Fox News: "Bill Maher rips sanctuary city 'hypocrites' turning away migrants: Abbott, DeSantis 'called their bluff' - 'The things that came out of the mouths of the leaders of New York and Chicago and even San Francisco, were pretty astounding,' Maher remarked."

Biden won't debate

NY Post: "Biden cheat sheet for Iraq PM meeting caught on camera — including instructions to ‘pause’."

Last week, Dementia Joe held an event with the Prime Minister of Japan and Joe's podium had a teleprompter set up (the PM did not).  Biden spoke from the teleprompter and then fell back on a binder to answer two questions that he got in advance.  Last night, he congratulated members of the U.S. military for actions in Israel and he couldn't get through this simple exchange without notes which he conspicuously reads as he's mumbling:
There are six jump cuts in this video that lasts less than a minute! This is the BEST that the White House could do? They couldn’t get the meds in time to jack up old Joe to give an address to camera, so we’ll just hand Grandpa some cue cards to read and try to pass it off as him just being “overwhelmed” with the sheer awesomeness of our military.
At every public event, Joey needs notecards, giant television screens, laminated binders and teleprompters.  When he strays from his crutches, Dementia Joe starts talking about meetings he had with dead Europeans.

Debate?  He won't debate.  Prove me wrong, Joe!

Day 1 in Trump's banana-republic show trial

Is anybody honest taking this travesty seriously?

Not the L.A. Times: "Why it’s hard to muster even a ‘meh’ over Trump’s New York criminal trial" - "But any voters who look beneath the surface are sure to be underwhelmed. Calling it election interference actually cheapens the term and undermines the deadly serious charges in the real election interference cases."

Reason: "Alvin Bragg Says Trump Tried To Conceal 'Another Crime.' What Crime? - The leading possibilities are all problematic in one way or another."

And Jonathan Turley says it's actually New York's legal system on trial:
Lawyers have been scouring the civil and criminal codes for any basis to sue or prosecute Trump before the upcoming 2024 election. This week will highlight the damage done to New York’s legal system because of this unhinged crusade. They’ve charged him with everything short of ripping a label off a mattress.

Just a few weeks ago, another judge imposed a roughly half billion dollar penalty in a case without a single victim who lost a single cent on loans with Trump. (Indeed, bank officials testified they wanted more business with the Trump organization).

Now Bragg is bringing a case that has taken years to develop and millions of dollars in litigation costs for all parties. That is all over a crime from before the 2016 election that is a misdemeanor under state law that had already expired under the statute of limitations.
Other than an expired statute of limitations and the lack of definition of an actual crime, it's an airtight case.  It's obvious there's one law for Trump and another for everybody else.

Biden won't debate

Hot Air: "News Organizations Push for Biden and Trump to Debate"
There isn't a lot of confidence in Joe Biden agreeing to debate Donald Trump at this point. Joe Biden can't get through a speech or press conference anymore. He has notecards from staff to remind him what he is doing and the names of the people he is dealing with. The notecards for a press conference include a list of reporters with whom to call on and their photos so Biden can recognize them. Often there are reports that the reporters submitted their questions in advance. That allows the staff to provide answers that allow Biden to just read the answers.
Dementia Joe hasn't had an official press conference since 2022 and it's been almost 300 days since he's sat down for an interview with a reputable news source.  (Well, it was MSNBC, but close enough).

Iran fails

Fox News: "US military shoots down 'dozens' of Iranian drones fired at Israel, as Jewish state air defense system excels - The interceptions occurred hours after Iran launched drones and ballistic missiles."

Either this was a performative show from Iran or Israel's Iron Dome defense is really that good.  Iran gets nothing from this attack and now opens the door for retaliation from Israel.

But did you get your $35 insulin?

Wall Street Journal: "Biden’s Green-Energy Price Shock - The cost of electricity has climbed by 29.4% since January 2021."
Do White House officials pay electric bills? They strangely keep saying the President’s climate agenda is reducing electric-power rates even as the cost of running your dishwasher is sky-rocketing, as illuminated by the Labor Department’s consumer-price index.

The nearby chart shows the average change in electricity prices over the last decade. Electric rates remained relatively flat in the seven years before President Biden took office, rising 5%. Thank cheap natural gas. Yet since January 2021 electricity prices have soared 29.4%—about 50% more than overall inflation.
Americans don't need luxuries like food and electricity.

The 3.5 percent year-over-year increase in the Consumer Price Index — announced on Wednesday — is a reminder that President Biden’s most conspicuous failure has been that he broke the 2 percent ceiling on inflation that had been kept in place for the last 30 years.
I've never heard of "supercore inflation" before but, like everything else under Biden, it's worse than ever:
A hotter-than-expected consumer price index report rattled Wall Street Wednesday, but markets are buzzing about an even more specific prices gauge contained within the data — the so-called supercore inflation reading.

Along with the overall inflation measure, economists also look at the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, to find the true trend. The supercore gauge, which also excludes shelter and rent costs from its services reading, takes it even a step further. Fed officials say it is useful in the current climate as they see elevated housing inflation as a temporary problem and not as good a measure of underlying prices.

Supercore accelerated to a 4.8% pace year over year in March, the highest in 11 months.

But, ya know, $35 insulin.

It would have been nice to see Chait come to this epiphany of liberal concern about the squelching of debate and censorship of free speech in a general sense, for all speakers.  But, as usual, the shoutdowns were just fine until they started to come for Dementia Joe.

Baby steps, I guess.

Straight into my veins

A veteran of National Public Radio pulls back the curtain and confirms every conservative's suspicion about the deep-seated bias there: "I’ve Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here’s How We Lost America’s Trust."

Some excerpts:
Back in 2011, although NPR’s audience tilted a bit to the left, it still bore a resemblance to America at large. Twenty-six percent of listeners described themselves as conservative, 23 percent as middle of the road, and 37 percent as liberal.

By 2023, the picture was completely different: only 11 percent described themselves as very or somewhat conservative, 21 percent as middle of the road, and 67 percent of listeners said they were very or somewhat liberal. We weren’t just losing conservatives; we were also losing moderates and traditional liberals.
No kidding.
Concerned by the lack of viewpoint diversity, I looked at voter registration for our newsroom. In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans. None.
Uh-huh.  Go on.
The laptop was newsworthy. But the timeless journalistic instinct of following a hot story lead was being squelched. During a meeting with colleagues, I listened as one of NPR’s best and most fair-minded journalists said it was good we weren’t following the laptop story because it could help Trump
Not only do I totally believe this story, I believe it's being replayed and replicated in newsrooms - large and small - all across this country.  Furthermore, like this "fair-minded" NPR journalist, I believe these people are willing parties to the fraud with a clear conscious because Trump.  Once you've convinced yourself that you're saving democracy, all journalistic standards fly out the window.

"Are you kidding me?"

Here's Jonathan Turley in the NY Post: "Judge calls out blatant double standard when it comes to Biden’s Justice Department and Hunter"
US District Judge Ana Reyes slammed the DOJ for stonewalling Congress on the subpoenas while imprisoning figures like former Trump adviser Peter Navarro for doing the same thing.

The Biden administration has blocked the testimony of prosecutors Mark Daly and Jack Morgan, who were involved in an inexplicable decision of the Justice Department to allow major felonies against Hunter Biden to lapse.

In prior hearings, IRS whistleblowers testified that they had an agreement on the table to extend the statute of limitations on the crimes, but special counsel David Weiss allowed the period to lapse without any explanation. Since the DOJ was in the midst of plea negotiations, it made no sense that the DOJ would simply kill potential charges.
Remember that the Biden DOJ tried to sweep this whole thing under the rug with a sweetheart plea deal that was squashed by a judge who was paying attention.

I considered this whole issue a tempest in a teapot and just an unfortunate coincidence.  But, as he is prone to do, Dementia Joe just simply declares that "I didn't do that."  Whether it's Afghanistan or inflation or speaking to dead foreign leaders or leaving classified documents lying around his garage, Biden will accept no criticism and evince no remorse.

The tempest over Ms. McDaniel suggests the press is preparing to make the same mistake again. This is bad for the country, but it’s even worse for the press, which still doesn’t understand why it is so mistrusted.
This long march of the media destroying its own credibility and simultaneously wondering why Americans don't want to buy their product is fascinating to watch.  Enjoyable, too.

In any case, Biden's claim about billionaires paying an 8% rate is a lie which he has been repeated for three years despite fact checks from every major news outlet pointing out that this is very misleading. In all, he's made this dishonest claim more than 30 times.
As this article notes, Dementia Joe has been fact-checked on this false claim multiple times in multiple different news sources but he keeps on repeating it.  This is why he won't do media interviews anymore: the fear he'll be called out on his multiple, repeated, self-hagiographic lies.

Just like student loans, this is more of Democrats making promises they cannot possibly keep because they are unconstitutional.  But after they falsely raise hopes and then these actions are squashed as illegal, they'll declare "we tried but we were shut down by evil forces!"

Let it go broke

Reason: "A GOP Plan To Raise the Retirement Age Reveals How Unserious Washington Is About Social Security."
It's important to keep in mind that if you're someone interested in maintaining Social Security as a functioning program, the real threat isn't from proposed changes but from doing nothing. The trustees that oversee Social Security estimate that benefits will be cut by 23 percent starting in 2033, with further cuts needed in future years, unless policymakers make changes to the program's fundamental math.

"Virtually every serious person who works on Social Security policy knows the eligibility age must eventually rise higher," Brian Riedl, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and expert on the broken math that is pushing America's entitlement programs into a death spiral, told Reason. "That said, partisan reform blueprints only attract partisan demagoguery and poison the well for reform."
Raising the retirement age for far-off retirees is one of the most anodyne reforms even though it won't stave off the immediate budgetary problems.  But even that is a bridge too far for both political parties.  Better off to let the automatic benefit cuts kick in and embrace the chaos.

If you've read one Krugman article over the past year, you've read them all: Americans just don't understand how great they have it under Bidenomics.  They need to do their homework!

This past week, the Federal Reserve held off on interest rate cuts because - you guessed it - core inflation is still too high.  Yes, it's down but that means that the cost of things is still going up, just slower.

Orange man bad - year 10

TIPP Insights: "The Left's Lies Are Powering Trump's Lead - Voters do not buy the Left's and media's lies about Trump anymore."

I can't believe that 1) we're entering an entire decade of "worse than Hitler" hysteria and that 2) the Left still believes this is going to work.  Trump lost in 2020 because it was - as I like to say - a "turn the page" moment where a lot of Americans wanted less Trumpian drama and to forget about covid.  What they got in exchange for that bargain is a United States that is worse off in nearly every measurable way, except for the stock market (which is artificially boosted by inflation.)

David Frum said (paraphrasing) that if you call everyone who wants to secure the border a "fascist" then Americans are going to hire the fascists.  Americans are getting wise to the damage being done and no surplus of Paul Krugman articles is going to convince them otherwise.

That's Bidenomics, baby!

CBS News: "U.S. drops from top 20 happiest countries list in 2024 World Happiness Report."
Unhappy news for Americans: The United States is no longer among the 20 happiest countries in the world, according to new data from Gallup and its partners.

In the newly released 2024 World Happiness Report, the U.S. dropped out of the top 20 on the list for the first time in the report's 12-year history. The U.S. now ranks at No. 23, compared to No. 15 last year.
Well, at least Biden can point to his successful foreign policy: "Biden Sets Record for Embassy Evacuations."

Another record!  How does he do it?

Tuesday, March 19, 2024

Yeah, that's not gonna happen

Here's a good question for the White House with the expected response:
Q Thanks, Karine. Yeah. When will the President hold another news conference so we can ask a question of him without having helicopter noise or jet noise in the background?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: I don’t have anything to preview — to share. Obviously, the President — the President, as you just say- — as you were just saying, the President takes questions pretty regularly, enjoys having engagement with all of you.

I don’t have a press conference to lay out for you at this time.

Q But is there — is there talk of one?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: I don’t have anything for you.
Dementia Joe can't do it.  In every public event, he is either tethered to a teleprompter, a laminated large-print binder, or cheat-sheet note cards.  A news conference without the questions in advance?  No chance.

A perfect example of the government "helping"

Reason: "Seattle Law Mandating Higher Delivery Driver Pay Is a Disaster - Just two weeks after the law went into effect, Seattleites had to contend with $26 coffees and $32 sandwiches."

In other words, while the ordinance theoretically raises driver earnings to over $26 per hour—a number that ironically far exceeds Seattle's $19.97 standard minimum wage—drivers are barely logging any hours as a result of the drastic decrease in demand for food delivery. As one Seattle driver summarized: "It was dead. Demand was dead." A second driver put it more bluntly: "I've got nothin'. I'm not gonna sit here for hours for one frickin' order."

Great job, Seattle.  But good intentions, amirite?

So...more taxes

Here's the Boston Globe jumping into the fray: "How to fix Social Security."

I'll save you the trouble of reading: it's automatic tax increases.  And while the article hints at pairing tax increases with benefit cuts to bridge the gap, that latter measure floats away like a feather in the wind.

We simply cannot have an honest discussion about Social Security

In today's NY Times, their tendentious resident economist Paul Krugman writes: "Social Security and Medicare Are on the Ballot."

If you're accustomed to either Krugman's style or typical discussions on Social Security, you'll be unsurprised to find that this argument is long on emotional appeal and short on numbers:
All of this has, I believe, encouraged Biden and his officials to stake out a firm position opposing cuts to America’s social safety net — indeed, calling for increased benefits, to be paid for with increased taxes on corporations and high-income individuals.
Yeah, baby!  Is there anything easier than asking somebody else to pay for your benefit?  But as I've regularly noted: Social Security is (by law) a universal program that requires benefits to (roughly) equal the amount of money paid into the system (by law).  Is Krugman OK with Bill Gates receiving a monthly million-dollar benefit check?

To ask is to answer.

Even the Congressional Budget Office admits this would happen under current law:
Because Social Security benefits are tied to the amount of earnings on which taxes are paid, however, some of that increase in revenues would be offset by additional benefits paid to people with earnings above the maximum taxable amount under current law.
Also: how long would we extend the solvency of Social Security with these huge tax increases and unprecedented changes to the program?  Answer: 13 years until we're facing insolvency again:
The first alternative, which would increase the taxable share of earnings from jobs covered by Social Security to 90 percent, would delay the exhaustion of the combined trust funds by 4 years, until calendar year 2037. The second alternative, which would apply the 12.4 percent payroll tax to earnings over $250,000, would delay the exhaustion of the combined trust funds by 13 years, until calendar year 2046.
Having destroyed the universality of Social Security, what will be the next gimmick?  Do Paul Krugman and the NY Times even care?  Nope: we're just trying to get past the next election.

He lies about everything, all the time

Federalist: "Turns Out Biden Lied About Hur, Beau, And Why He Pilfered Classified Documents."

Dementia Joe had an $8 million payday coming for his ghostwritten book, so he needed those classified documents for his story.  Biden is on tape telling his ghostwriter to check out the classified material:
When Hur asked the president about the classified papers in his possession, the president contended that he “had no purpose for them, and I think it would be inappropriate for me to keep clearly classified documents.” But Hur, in his prepared testimony for Congress, says: “We also identified other recorded conversations during which Mr. Biden read classified information aloud to his ghostwriter.”
Looking back on Biden's hastily-assembled press conference on February 8th, it's now clear that almost everything he said was a lie:
Q    Mr. President, why did you share classified information with your ghostwriter?

THE PRESIDENT:  I did not share classified information.  I did not share it.

Q    With your ghostwriter?

THE PRESIDENT:  With my ghostwriter, I did not.  Guarantee you, I did not.  What the —

Q    But the special counsel said that —

Q    Okay.

Unraveling the cover-up

National Review: "Exclusive: Jim Jordan Threatens to Hold FBI Director in Contempt over Hunter Biden Laptop Story."

Here's more from the (paywalled) NRO article over at Ace:
"During her transcribed interview, Ms. Dehmlow revealed that the same FBI personnel who were warning social media companies about a potential Russian 'hack and leak' operation in the lead-up to the 2020 election knew that the laptop belonging to Hunter Biden was not Russian disinformation," the letter reads.

"After the New York Post published a story based on the contents of the laptop about Biden family influence peddling, the FBI made the institutional decision to refuse to answer direct questions from social media companies about the laptop's authenticity," the letter adds.

IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, an IRS agent with years of experience on the Hunter Biden tax case, testified to the House Ways and Means Committee last year that the FBI verified the authenticity of the contents of Hunter Biden's laptop in November 2019.
They knew.  But tell me the story again, Papa, about how the government was almost overthrown by a bunch of middle-age guys with selfie sticks.
