Is there anything that E-mail can’t do? – “Ding! Time to throw your drawers in the dryer. That's the message University of Iowa students can now receive by e-mail. Thanks to software installed along with new high-efficiency washers last fall, the school's dormitory residents can receive e-mail alerts when their laundry cycles have finished.”

  1. Eric,

Those same washers can't tell that a second student took out the first student's clothes and inserted their own for a free wash.

  2. I was at Syracuse University last summer for a physics conference, and the laundry room had a home page - you could watch the progress of your laundry, from the washer to the dryer.

It did save on trips to the laundry room. It also beat sitting around in a damp basement, waiting for your duds.

I guess this supercedes the last technological advance for timing the progress of ones's laundry, i.e. the wristwatch.
