As President Kennedy said, "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the end of next month, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."
The rush to hang the first "Mission Unaccomplished" banner onto each new car technology is unseemly. And can sometimes seem desperate, when we get claims like "each car costs $650,000" (or whatever). Apparently, this will be the first industry where R&D amortization will not apply.
And in the long run, the naysayers are likely to be wrong. Hybrids were once certain to be a flop, too. But a funny thing happened on the way to the scrap heap.
