George Will in “Social Security as welfare”: “Whatever is done, or if nothing is done, to reform Social Security, it will be increasingly perceived as a welfare program, important primarily for the least self-sufficient minority.”

Emphasis added. This has been my position also. As the investor class widens (primarily through 401k participation), more Americans will wonder why they’re giving up 12.4% of their salary for close to 50 years in exchange for a benefit that in current dollars equals less than $1000 a month.
